Center of Consciousness

It feels like the center of consciousness or our center of self lies right behind the eyes (as though we are observing the universe from an entity inside our head), maybe because sight is our most pronounced perceptual system. Would that not necessarily be the case for people born blind? After all, there is no reason that center feeling should need to be near the brain.
